Cellular Abroad's Prepaid SIM Card and Unlocked GSM Cell Phone packages are perfect for first time buyers as well as seasoned travelers in need of International cellular communication. Our package deals will save you money and time while giving you everything you need to make and receive cell phone calls in many overseas destinations. Each package includes an unlocked gsm cell phone, a SIM card, a worldwide charger and outlet adapters.

Cellular Abroad carries two types of cell phone/SIM card packages: Country-Specific and International. Country-specific packages are ideal for travel within a specific country. Each package includes a SIM card that enables you to take advantage of the local rates, low international rates and FREE incoming calls in most countries.

Many of our customers have requested

Many of our customers have requested that we offer recharge cards / vouchers in addition to our prepaid SIM cards. While it's true that recharge cards are available in many retail outlets, there are times when people prefer to have their airtime credit pre-purchased. Since recharge cards simply supply a code number which one uses in a simple automated procedure to apply talktime credit, the recharge codes can be sold via email or over the phone. Note: We can only sell phone-in or email-order recharge codes to previous customers. In seconds, you can buy additional talktime credit, allowing you to extend your calling time. Cellular Abroad is bringing a new level of convenience to prepaid cellular calling!

If you're looking for a solution for a busy executive, a student traveling abroad or if you're planning a trip at an exclusive resort without access to transportation, it's extremely convenient to be able to purchase additional recharge cards before your trip. Since a recharge card is basically a disposable card with a recharge code, we are also able to sell you the recharge code over the phone or by email to your overseas location while you're on the road. (With the exception our Talk Abroad international recharge, you will need to apply the recharge code yourself from your own handset.)

This information is available on the SIM card pages where we carry recharge cards. We have listed all of our recharge card offerings and their carriers below as a convenience.

Cellular Abroad is pleased to introduce to the public

Duet Handsets

Cellular Abroad is pleased to introduce to the public a new GSM cell phone manufacturer called Duet that is taking the international cell phone market by storm. These handsets have unique features plus are high quality products, thus, giving other manufacturers such as Nokia, LG and Motorola a run for their money. The most unique feature that all of the Duet’s have in common is that they have two SIM card slots – essentially, they are two phones in one. This is perfect for travelers as well as for use as a primary handset in the US. Here are some examples of how you can benefit from this unique feature. If you intend to use the handset in the United States or Canada, you can have one SIM card in the phone for your business and the other SIM card for personal use. Travelers can keep their local SIM card (such as the one provided by AT&T or T-mobile) so you can retain your local number, and in the other slot, put in a country specific SIM card or our National Geographic Travel SIM. Or, you can put in a local country SIM as well as the Nat Geo Travel SIM. In short, these phones offer a distinct advantage over one line phones.

Other important features that all phones offer include the following:

* FCC approved
* FM Radio
* Analog TV
* Digital Camera

Please click on each phone model to view the additional features.

Cellular Abroad is so impressed by these handsets that we have decided to utilize them for our National Geographic Travel Phone and, we have also decided to offer them for wholesale (for wholesale inquiries, please contact Scott Nielsen at scott (at) cellularabroad.com.

International Cell Phone Rental Information

While Cellular Abroad does offer international cell phone rentals, most people, rather than renting a cell phone, can actually benefit from actually owning their own international cell phone. Many people are unaware of the options and are unnecessarily and repeatedly wasting money to rent an international cell phone while they would be much better off purchasing one. There are, however, some circumstances in which it does make perfect sense to rent an international cell phone. Please read this brief guide so you may make an informed decision.

If you are interested in an international cell phone rental from Cellular Abroad, you will receive a GSM cellular phone (and the appropriate SIM card of course) that is conveniently charged and ready to go. Renting an international cell phone is advised for those who are traveling overseas for only one or two weeks and will most likely never need an international cell phone again, or at least in the foreseeable future, or do not use or want a domestic cellphone that can be used worldwide. On occasion, companies, mostly large companies, only allow employees to rent cell phones, even though they would be much better off owning their own international cell phone.

If your domestic cell phone carrier currently uses the GSM system, as does Cingular, T-Mobile and in many places, AT&T, you can have the convenience and savings of traveling worldwide with an international cell phone that works in the US as well as in the vast majority of countries (200 countries as of 2005, including all of Europe, Africa and Asia except for Japan, and most of South America as well as other destinations) by purchasing one of Cellular Abroad's unlocked triband GSM phones and SIM cards. You may use our unlocked GSM phones with your local carrier by simply inserting your US SIM card for domestic use. If you currently do not have a GSM provider in the US, you may also purchase our prepaid SIM card for the US which is the perfect solution for those who do not want the obligation of a contract or who would just like an emergency phone or even perhaps a "starter" cell phone for a youngster. Once overseas, slip out your US (or Canadian) SIM card and insert one of our country-specific SIM cards depending on the country or countries of your destination - it's that easy. You may also purchase an international prepaid SIM card if you are planning on going to several countries. Please note that while the above mentioned carriers may offer tri-band phones for international use, these phones are "locked" meaning that the phone will not accept any other SIM card than the one they provide, thus locking you into their expensive roaming rates.

Even if currently you do not have a domestic cell phone or do but either it is not GSM or you do not mind the inconvenience of utilizing one cell phone domestically and a different cell phone for international use, you may still find it convenient and cost effective to purchase rather than to rent an international GSM cell phone. Prices have dropped significantly and you will find that you will spend about the same or less purchasing a cell phone as you would renting an international cell phone for just 2 or 3 trips. If you decide to purchase you will get a brand new phone that is yours to keep and won't require you to go through the steps of sending it back after your trip nor having to go through the process of a cell phone rental once again for your next trip. We find that approximately 80% of our customers prefer to purchase rather than to rent an international cell phone.

Lastly, a common concern is that new technology may render today's cell phone obsolete in the near future. While it is true that there are always new cell phone models available in the market place, the actual technology is the same. In fact, while most of the rest of the world only uses GSM, many cellular carriers in the USA (and Canada) which currently use a few different standards, are quickly abandoning the older standards and embracing GSM, the universal standard.

Cellular Abroad offers both solutions and we are more than happy to accommodate you whatever your needs may be.

Cellular Abroad's prepaid cell phone service is not just the budget way of obtaining international cellular service-it's the smart way!

All incoming calls are always FREE

The SIM card or chip is the brain of the phone and is what allows you to make calls within Bangladesh and internationally. The card is prepaid so that you will never receive a phone bill and will always be in complete control of your expenditures. If needed, you can simply add more talk time to the card by purchasing scratch off recharge cards and entering in the PIN number on the handset. And since incoming calls are always free, even if you have depleted your credit you can still receive incoming calls from anywhere in the world.

The SIM card slips easily into the phone and if needed, you can purchase other SIM cards as well for other countries to where you may be traveling. We also offer international SIM cards that are convenient for travel to multiple countries.

We offer a wide assortment of GSM cell phones for purchase and you can use any of our GSM phones in conjunction with the SIM cards we offer. However, for added convenience and savings we recommend our package deal of a cell phone and Bangladesh SIM card. This package is popular with our customers and the phone will also work in over 200 other countries (including the US with one of the many carriers using the GSM system). Once you have the appropriate phone, it's easy and inexpensive to purchase and use a SIM card for the next country to which you will travel.

International Cell Phones

International Cell Phones
An international cell phone is classified as a GSM mobile phone that operates on the GSM 900 and GSM 1800 frequency. An international cell phone with the appropriate sim card, will provide coverage in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Pacific Rim including Australia. A world cell phone with the GSM 1900 frequency will expand coverage to include the United States, Canada and a growing part of South America.
Every GSM wireless phone we sell is unlocked and will work with any SIM card from any carrier in the world. SIM cards may be purchased online for a growing number of select international destinations.
A GSM 900/1800 international cell phone is perfect if you only plan on using the cell phone overseas and they start at only $99. Smaller more feature packed world cell phones start at just $179.

Keeping in touch while in Bangladesh can be very a frustrating and expensive experience without an international cell phone and Bangladesh SIM card.
Sometimes a payphone takes coins (But how many is anybody's guess!!!), other times a proprietary calling card and still others only a credit card will do with accompanying instructions that would take a week to understand.
Bangladesh cellular phone rentals can significantly cut down on the frustration of calling home while abroad but the airtime rates would bankrupt all but the thickest of wallets. Airtime rates for a Bangladesh cell phone rental can typically start at $1.50 and may be as high as $2+/minute.
Think you got a deal on your world phone and plan on doing some international roaming? With international roaming charges the airtime rate you will pay is out of this world.
The Bangladesh prepaid SIM chip is a quick and easy way to convert your existing world phone into a prepaid Bangladesh cell phone for Bangladesh and as discussed is more economical then a Bangladesh cell phone rental. For your next assignment or vacation in Bangladesh, this SIM chip (combined with an unlocked GSM World cell phone) helps you stay connected while avoiding those international roaming surcharges that always accompany your 'home' SIM card while abroad. We offer a growing selection of prepaid SIM Cards for other international destinations as well as a wide variety of GSM cell phone accessories and GSM international cell phones.

Your Bangladesh SIM card will provide

Your Bangladesh SIM card will provide you with a Bangladesh cellular phone number, which can be found on the back cover of the booklet that comes with your SIM card. The number begins with 01.
Travel to Bangladesh
Be sure that the battery is adequately charged
Insert the Bangladesh SIM chip into the cellular phone*
Turn on your phone
Enter the PIN code^
Start calling**
Customer service for your Bangladesh prepaid SIM card is available 24 hours a day by dialing 121 at any time from your Bangladesh cellular phone.
For your reference, the emergency numbers while in Bangladesh are: 999 for Police, for Ambulance for Fire
*You will need to snap out the thumbnail sized Bangladesh SIM card along the perforated edge of its holder and then insert the Bangladesh SIM card into your international cell phone with the gold contacts of the SIM card facing the metal contacts of your international cellular phone.
^ Your phone will prompt you for a 4-digit PIN code, which is located on the duo-fold envelope affixed to the SIM card. The PUK is only required to unblock your phone if you enter in a PIN code incorrectly. Follow your cell phone manual instructions to correctly use the PUK to unblock your phone.
**When calling overseas from the United States to your Bangladesh cell phone, callers will need to dial 011 followed by the country code 880 and then your Bangladesh cell phone number, omitting the first 0 (zero). To call abroad from your Bangladesh cell phone simply dial + followed by the country code and phone number. To call Telestial you would dial +18582742686

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of mobile users in Bangladesh's flood and cyclone-prone areas will now receive advance warning of an impending natural disaster through an alert on their cell phones, a government official says.
Bangladesh -- one of the world's most densely populated countries -- is highly vulnerable to natural disasters, including cyclones, storm surges, droughts, floods and earthquakes, which often affect millions of people.
In a bid to minimize loss of life and damage to property, Bangladeshi authorities have signed an agreement with two mobile operators in the country to provide disaster early warning alerts to subscribers.
Grameenphone and state-owned Teletalk will send instant messages to their subscribers in two of the most vulnerable areas -- flood-prone north-central Shirajganj district and cyclone-prone Cox's Bazar district on the coast.
"This new initiative will mean that people will get an alert on their phones warning them that they are likely to face flooding or a cyclone," Syed Ashraf, communications specialist for the country's Disaster Management Bureau, told Reuters by telephone.
"So they will then be able to take action like evacuate their homes and seek shelter in assigned places."
USER-FRIENDLY
Bangladesh, with a population of around 162 million, has more than 46 million mobile phone subscribers.
Ashraf said the messages would not be the usual SMS format, but would flash automatically on the screen of mobile phone sets, instead of going to message boxes.
This way, people would not have to even push a button on their handsets, making it very user-friendly, he added.
Bangladesh is one of the riskiest countries in the world for natural disasters, according to a U.N. list published last week.
Cyclone Aila, which struck the coastal belt last month, killed more that 170 people, damaged over 500,000 houses and affected more than 3 million people.
The country has an effective early warning system operated by the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society through its 42,000 volunteers who move around with bicycles and megaphones informing people of the impending danger and advising them to evacuate their homes.
But some of the more remote disaster-prone areas are not covered by volunteers and often villagers have no idea that their homes are likely to be flooded or that a severe cyclone is heading their way.
Officials say the new service aims to strengthen the existing early warning mechanism, reduce the number of people killed or injured and minimise loss of property.
The initiative will be piloted over the next six months with the intention of expanding it across the country.

India's Home Minister Shivraj Patil was shocked

Bangladesh cellphone network - a strength of the country
at 9/08/2007 12:23:00 AM ·
Last year I reported that:
India's Home Minister Shivraj Patil was shocked when he found mobile phones in the country's eastern frontiers functioning, courtesy of the sophisticated rural telephone network of Bangladesh instead of the Indian communications network coverage.This year Bangladesh is moving ahead with GPRS/EDGE enabled mobile phone network making access to internet possible in rural areas with or without Pcs.The Uncultured Project (by a Canadian expat) thinks that Bangladesh cellphone service is better than Canada:
I’m writing now from a rural village in Bangladesh (called Modiphur). There is no electricity, no running water, and the diesel generator that was powering a ceiling fan and light bulb died earlier this night. Bangladesh is still a third world country afterall. But, despite all this, I am still able to check my mail, see what’s going on at Digg, and post to this blog.Bangladesh is one of the few countries in the world that can guarantee each one of its residents can get a cellphone signal - no matter where they are in the country. With a population of over 150 million (over four times Canada’s population) that’s pretty impressive. There are populated parts in the North in Canada that most cellphone service providers don’t bother putting up towers for. Not only can Bangladeshis send and receive calls from anywhere in the country - they can also surf the web on either an EDGE or GPRS network. Canada, unlike Bangladesh, does not even offer an unlimited flat-rate EDGE/GPRS internet service. The gigabytes of data that I have used over the EDGE network here in Bangladesh has cost me only $20 a month.

For all the talk about "making poverty history"

For all the talk about "making poverty history" through aid and debt relief at the G8 meeting in Scotland and among aging rock stars at Live8 concerts, perhaps the best tool for poverty alleviation on the continent is the mobile phone. Yes, that ubiquitous handheld device has done wonders for the poor around the world. It all started in Bangladesh
GA_googleFillSlot("news_300x250_atf_premium");
Bangladesh is often used as the case study for the impact that mobile telephony can have on the economically disadvantaged. In the late 1990s Grameen Bank, a Dhaka-based for-profit enterprise long known in Bangladesh for making microloans to fund microenterprises by villagers, set up Grameen Telecommunications, a non-profit organization that provided low-cost phone services in rural areas. Using money borrowed from Grameen Bank, village entrepreneurs purchased mobile phones which they then used to sell phone services to customers -- other villagers -- by the call. The result: mobile phone entrepreneurs -- 95 percent of whom were female -- made a tidy profit while villagers reaped the benefits of instant communication. These benefits included communicating with distant family members, making it easier to find employment opportunities, having more options during emergency situations, enabling farmers to check prices in different markets before selling produce, and eventually allowing the quick and easy transfer of funds. The mobile phone microenterprise platform spread rapidly through the country and stimulated other economic activities among the rural poor, who have proven to be much more technology-savvy than many originally anticipated. The success of Bangladesh's microphone operators has not gone unnoticed. In Uganda, Grameen Foundation USA [web site] worked with mobile operator MTN to develop villagePhone, an initiative that enables poor rural individuals to become "Village Phone Operators" through partnerships with Ugandan microfinance institutions. MTN boasts on its web site that "these Village Phone businesses can be established in areas where electricity is unavailable and in areas where the MTN network can only be accessed with a booster antenna." Grameen Foundation USA has since piloted another program in Rwanda in partnership with MTN Rwanda and is publishing a free manual to encourage microfinance institutions and telecoms to create joint ventures for establishing cell phone franchise businesses for microloan clients. Leapfrogging technology
google_protectAndRun("render_ads.js::google_render_ad", google_handleError, google_render_ad);
Cell phones not only offer opportunity through voice services but emerging technologies that bring Internet access to phones, bypassing the need for a computer for connecting to the World Wide Web. Since computers are rare in much of the region due to poor wire-line infrastructure -- a recent study found 97 percent of people in Tanzania said they could access a mobile phone, while only 28 percent could access a landline -- and unreliable electrical grids, a technology that offers Internet access without a costly PC promises to pay dividends for Africans. Research in India has found Internet connectivity can be key to improving the livelihood of rural poor by giving them access to information -- everything from crop prices to the legal protocol to acquiring tenure to land. Internet access can simplify interaction with government institutions for mundane tasks like acquiring an identity card as well as potentially increasing transparency and reducing corruption in transactions with officials. Also, because calling plans are often pre-paid there is no need for a bank account or credit check. Cell phones have become a prime example of a technology that helps many different user groups. There are several beneficiaries of mobile phones at the village level:
Entrepreneurs who make money by selling phone services to villages on a per use basis.
Sellers of prepaid phone cards including poor urban youths and small business owners.
Users of phones who gain business and employment opportunities mentioned above. The benefits mobile phones bring at a local level can be extended to a country as a whole. A 2005 study by the Centre for Economic Policy Research and backed by the UK mobile phone giant Vodafone found higher rates of economic growth in developing countries with high mobile phone penetration. According to the study, a developing country which has an average of 10 more mobile phones per 100 population between 1996 and 2003 would have enjoyed per capita GDP growth that was 0.59 percent higher than an otherwise identical country. The survey also found a number of other benefits from mobile phone ownership including:
Mobiles save people living in rural communities the financial costs and time involved with travel. As a result, 85 percent of people in Tanzania and 79 percent in South Africa said they had greater contact and improved relationships with families and friends as a result of mobile phones
62 percent of small businesses in South Africa and 59 percent in Egypt said they had increased their profits as a result of mobile phones, in spite of increased call costs
Over 85 percent of small businesses run by black individuals in South Africa rely solely on a mobile phone for telecommunications The results of this study suggest that growth in the African telecom market will continue to pay off African economies. Africa: the hottest growth market for cellular

Year1998200220032004
Subscribers2 million28 million51 million82 millionYear-end figuresSource: International Telecommunication Union (ITU), The Economist Figures released in March 2005 from the London Business School reported that Africa has seen faster growth in mobile telephone subscriptions than any other region of the world over the last five years. At the end of 2004 Africa's largest mobile phone firm, Vodacom, had 14.4 million users while MTN had 14 million subscribers. As Vodacom's chief tells Reuters, "Telecoms are Africa's big success story -- perhaps the only one." The recent growth in the African telecom market hasn't only benefited local economies -- it has also generated significant amounts of revenue for mobile giants. Going after the African market is not a money-losing proposition for firms: according to the July 1, 2005 issue of The Economist, MTN, a South African mobile-phone operator with networks in Nigeria, Cameroon, Uganda, Rwanda and Swaziland had an operating margin of around 50% outside South Africa. Wider growth still faces challenges -- the cost of handsets While Africa has experienced tremendous growth in the mobile services market and still has room for growth with only 50% of Sub-Saharan Africa covered by a mobile signal, future expansion faces some hurdles. The largest of these is the cost of handsets. Mobile operators in Africa generally do not subsidize handsets like their counterparts in Europe and the United States and few rural Africans can afford the prices of the latest mobile gadgets. The solution of the African mobile majors was to band together in 2004 and invite international handset-makers to bid for a contract to supply up to 6 million handsets for less than $40 each. Motorola won the contract and handset delivery began in April 2005. Despite their low cost, the handsets are profitable for Motorola and the phones do not lack features. Motorola, following a page out of C.K. Prahalad's book, The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid: Eradicating Poverty Through Profits, knew that a low level of income doesn't make a consumer any less demanding about the functionality and value of their purchases, and accordingly has provided features appropriate for African consumers. For example, in a region where access to electricity is often in question, Motorola has built a low-cost handset has a standby time of two weeks. The Economist also points out that lower costs of handsets address another barrier to widespread adoption of cell phone: the high tariffs imposed on products and services by many African governments. Since taxes and duties are based on the cost of the good or service, lower prices will mean less of a tax burden on consumers. Anything that reduces the burden on the rural poor in developing countries should be considered a good thing. Rural poverty is probably not going away on its own anytime soon and stimulating sustainable economic growth through microenterprises and information technology is a better solution than direct aid. Too often direct aid has not only bred corruption and the misallocation of resources away from those who need it most, but has also fostered dependency and skewed the perceived value of goods and services. Private sector investment -- through vehicles such as mobile phones -- may do a better job eradicating poverty, building dignity and respect, encouraging entrepreneurship, and reducing dependency than handouts under traditional aid programs. That's not to say that aid dollars have no role under such a development schema, but it is important to consider using donor funds for nontraditional programs such as microloans that will stimulate sound long-term economic growth. With this consideration, Africa may well again be a land of opportunity.
