Grameenphone begins fiber replacement of Bangladesh Railway's Fiber Optic Network
Grameenphone has once again taken the initiative to increase the strength of its transmission network by upgrading a major portion of the nationwide Fiber Optic Network leased from Bangladesh Railway (BR).
With the formal inauguration of the BR Fiber Replacement Project in Pubail, Gazipur earlier this month, Grameenphone not only took a big step to prepare its own network to meet future challenges, but also to contribute to the technical development of an important national resource.
Grameenphone CTO Md. Shafiqul Islam expressed a great deal of confidence in providing better services to its valued subscribers especially at the remotest part of the country through the BR fiber replacement project. "This project will substantially increase the capacity of the nationwide BR Fiber Optic Network and it is also an indication of Grameenphone's continued efforts to provide its subscribers the best network experience," he added.
It should be noted that Grameenphone has been using the 2,000-km BR-owned nationwide Fiber Optic Network for the last ten years on lease to build a state-of-the-art mobile transmission backbone network and to serve its growing subscriber base.
In the first phase of the project, 628-km of fiber optic link will be replaced along four different routes, in alignment with the transmission network requirements. Eventually, almost 1600 kilometers of the total fiber optic network will be upgraded from a composite cable network of single-pair fiber to 24-pair fiber and 10-pair copper cable network to support the requirements of Grameenphone and Bangladesh Railway simultaneously.
This fiber replacement project will add to the strength of Grameenphone's network, making it possible for the company to serve its subscribers better. At the same time, Bangladesh Railway will benefit from a new robust transmission network that is essential for an effective train transport management system.
